The Bagel Place

The Bagel Place

Person 1: What’s to eat around here?

Person 2: There’s a place across the street from campus that sells bagels.

Person 3: You mean, The Bagel Place?

This was a real conversation that happened in my second year of grad school before the start of a Gender, Work, and Family seminar. I’ll let you decided which person I was.

There is, in fact, a restaurant right across the street from the University of Maryland that sells bagels, and while there are now two places selling bagels, the far superior one is The Bagel Place. (The other one is pretending to sell New York-style bagels, and I assure you it would be better to take the train up to New York and get some fresh, authentic New York bagels, if that’s what you’re craving.)

The Bagel Place serves freshly baked bagels in a variety of flavors – some you’ve probably had before: blueberry, onion, everything (my fav), cinnamon raisin, cinnamon sugar, jalapeño, and chocolate chip, to name a few; and some you probably haven’t but are obvious creations given where we are (Maryland): old bay. The Old Bay bagel, however, is extremely delicious on the Pride of Baltimore – plain cream cheese, sliced nova style salmon, swiss cheese, red onion, lettuce, and tomato.

In addition to the Pride of Baltimore, which I highly recommend, The Bagel Place offers an assortment of deli sandwich bagels, pizza bagels, and breakfast bagels. If you’re simply craving a yummy bagel and spread, The Bagel Place also serves a wide range of cream cheeses – walnut raisin, bacon scallion, jalapeño cheddar, garden (my fav), lox, and, of course, strawberry. If you can’t decide what you want, you can get a bag of bagels and spread to go and have it all.

On one of the most recent trips to The Bagel Place, we ordered a tuna salad bagel (you can also get a tuna salad melt) on an everything bagel (told you it’s my favorite) and a whitefish salad platter with a multigrain bagel. Look at the scoop of cream cheese on the whitefish platter!

That The Bagel Place also serves coffee should be a given; they have an espresso bar brewing up all of your favorites. But, what may be less expected are two of my favorite things about The Bagel Place – their muffins and their soups. Although it may not be entirely surprising that a place that sells bagels might also sell muffins and soup, I assure you that The Bagel Place’s are surprisingly delicious. All of the muffins are to die for, and while I’m sure all of the soups are amazing, my absolute favorite is the ravioli soup. Yep, ravioli and soup calling back to my childhood days of Chef Boyardee but way, way better. In the picture above you can see the ravioli soup peeking from behind the veggie bagel (and a pumpernickel bagel sandwich in the background).

So if you’re looking for a place that sells bagels, look no further than The Bagel Place. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, or even catering you can have your bagel and eat it, too.
