Greenbelt Farmers Market

Yesterday was opening day for the Greenbelt Farmers Market, and I could not have been happier! I had been eagerly awaiting this day for the past few weeks and nothing was going to stop me from getting my fresh food fix! Not even a little rain.

There have to be dozens of farmers’ markets in the DMV, but the Greenbelt Farmers Market is one of my favorite. Every Sunday from 10am-2pm from May 13 through November 18 (except Labor Day), the Greenbelt Farmers Market sets up shop in the parking lot behind the Greenbelt Municipal building.

Here you’ll find a healthy mix of fresh fruits, produce, and meats as well as prepared foods. For example, pick up sustainable seafood from Two Oceans; happy meat including pork, beef, chicken, and eggs from Ferguson Farms; your favorite mushrooms and some you may have never seen before from King Mushroom Farm; apples, peaches, and other fruits plus peach bbq sauce, jams, and sauces from Three Springs Fruit Farm; fruits, vegetables, and herbs from Pleitez Produce; and fresh baked breads, cookies, pastries, and even empanadas from Stone Hearth Bakery. Be sure to try Barnola’s flavorful granola, especially the Nutty Orange! Add to yogurt, make a parfait, or have it as a snack. Grab two bags. Trust me, you’ll love it.

Now that you have your groceries for the week, you need a treat for the day. I love Roy and T’s Kitchen Garden as well as El Piquin. Roy and T serve up Indonesian staples while El Piquin makes sweet and savory crepes to order, tacos and breakfast burritos, and fresh squeezed lemonade. Grab a cup of Zeke’s coffee (bring your own mug for a discount!) or get some grinds to power you through the week. As the market continues through the summer, you’ll be glad that Simple Pleasures Ice Cafe is there with their ice cream cart. Whether in a cup or cone, you have to try their handcrafted ice creams and sorbets.

Finally, two of my favorite vendors are Elk Run Vineyards and Heavenly Created Desserts. Sample a few of Maryland’s best wines from Elk Run. My favorite is Annapolis Sunset. At Heavenly Created Desserts, you will want to grab a few of their cupcakes. My absolute favorite of all time is the Nutter Butter. The flavors vary from week to week but if Nutter Butter ever graces the display case, be sure to include one in your order. Be warned though, Elk Run and Heavenly Created Desserts are not present every weekend. Check the Greenbelt Farmers Market schedule for these two vendors weekends.

Even with everything I’ve listed here, I haven’t included it all. You’ll have to check it out for yourself to get the full effect. There are even opportunities to join various co-ops to ensure your fresh foods throughout the year.

As a final note: be kind to the earth and be sure to bring your reusable grocery bags! For some super cute reusable bags, check out Baggu or TiMoMo.
